You can find rubbish bins in front of the entrance and garden of Cardiff Castle (Cardiff, Wales). There are several design of rubbish bins with bilingual notice of English and Welsh in Cardiff, which have different functions. Please look at the following pictures! By the way, when I stayed in Cardiff for more than half the year, I was deeply impressed by the hospitality of the people; they were very polite and kind, and filled me with warm feelings in spite of me being an outsider.

The most popular type has no classification, but, in the public area for example, universities, museums, shopping districts and city centers, almost every bin comes with two or three separated throwing slots.

I would like to emphasize that this is lovely for smokers. That is, many bins have an ashtray at the top slots, and is very unique, and sometimes there is an extra slot for gum.

The upper picture shows the state of entrance of Cardiff Business School (Colum Drive, Cardiff), and the lower one indicates the inside condition of St Fagans National Museum of History (St Fagans, Cardiff). These bins have two openings:one side is for general waste and the other side is for recyclable materials.

Anyway, in Cardiff central area, there were a lot of bins with the input port for recycling. However, the bin in front of Cardiff Market has a single slot with ashtray.

The garbage collections were done by the special staff of the public office with a small vehicle. The below pictures are the conditions of collection in a market district and a new open space of the Cardiff Central Station.

There are so many beautiful places in Wales, I guess, thus the design of bins was made for the purpose of blending and integrating into the country scenes. The below pictures are a bin of a park near Llandaff Cathedral (Llandaff, Cardiff), and bins in the garden and inside of Caerphilly castle (Caerphilly, Wales) in South Wales. Notice that the bins’ deep green color harmonizes with the surrounding landscape.

When I was not busy observing bins, I was looking for good cuisines. During our visit to Cardiff, two of us dined at so many excellent spots, for example Steak of the Art (CH10 2HE) and Casanova (CF10 1EA). The former serves lovely steaks, (I especially recommend the fillet), while the latter has some excellent Italian courses. Another Italian restaurant which we used to have sometimes is Giovanni’s Restraint (CF10 1AJ); my wife always ordered Costol di Agnello (steak of lamb shoulder). If you plan to buy some lamb meat at Cardiff, I must recommend you to get an excellent one in J.T. Morgans Ltd Butcher (CF10 1AU) because the butcher and staffs are trustworthy. Do you care for some sweets? You might find good Portuguese ones in Nata & Co (CF24 1LW). We appreciated the hospitality of the shops.

See you soon in the next issue!

What an interesting angle to bring to your travels Akira. Lovely to hear your positive views of the friendly welcome and the good food :-) Of course, I am very happy to reciprocate and confirm that exactly these things have been at the heart of my many enjoyable visits to Japan. Let us hope that our visits can commence again soon
